Pedigree vs Registration

Often new owners are confused between these two important documents. Your puppy’s pedigree, essentially a family tree, is a written record of a dog’s genealogy of three generations or more for imported dogs. The pedigree will show you the names as well as performance titles of all dogs in your pup’s background. Your breeder must provide you with a registration certificate, with his part properly filled out. You must complete the application and send it to KUSA with the required fee (preferably per registered post). Every puppy must come from a litter that has been KUSA registered by the breeder, born in SA and from a Sire and Dam which is also registered by KUSA. Reputable breeders are only allowed to register one litter per female per year.

The seller must provide you with complete records to identify the puppy. KUSA requires that the seller provide the buyer with the following: breed, sex, and colour, date of birth, names and registration numbers of the parents, breeders name and date of transfer. You might still have a pedigreed dog but not registered because the puppy might be from a second litter from the same female in the same year which is not allowed by KUSA, but the puppy’s heritage cannot be certified.

Acquiring a registered puppy gives you peace of mind as the buyer is guaranteed of the dog’s genealogy.
